About

Mosaic art flows through history like a great river through a porous desert, disappearing & reappearing again and again.   – Carolo Bertelli

It’s such a great quote from the Italian Art Historian. There’s a story that comes with the pot on the above right. I lived in Gympie where my daughter and I survived two floods. The second time the river rose and engulfed the studio ‘Egyptian pot’ was bobbing around in the water. It had survived! I rescued it, washed it off and it sold, to a woman who now lives in Cooroy (selecting images on this site will mostly open them larger in a slide show).

Mosaic began for me in 1994 after a good friend said, ‘lets have a go at mosaic!’ I have been on a creative journey ever since.

Using a mix of items new and found, my designs are inspired by the coastal and hinterland regions of Southern Queensland I have called home for more than 35 years. I recently moved back to Adelaide to help care for my parents in their elder years, so I will continue my mosaic journey here for now.

Nature, especially the coastline, has always been my inspiration and calming place. More recently my designs come from the natural world that directly surrounds me, which at the present, is the south eastern coast of South Australia. I take inspiration too from an incredible history of mosaic and it’s uses. Architect Antonio Gaudi was an eye-opener for me, through flowing lines his use of mosaic becomes the building itself.

Commissions…

…are a big part of my practice. I offer a flexible design service that can faithfully capture ideas and extend them. I can work from a design you supply, or I can develop a concept for your site or situation that will surprise and delight you. Your mosaic can create a talking point in any area, wet or dry.

I’ve had a lot of private commissions, from vases, plates, platters, pots, urns, and hanging wall pieces (I’ve perfected a technique that keeps a wall piece light enough to hang and durable enough to last) – to exterior planters, table tops, bird baths, park benches, wall mosaics from small insets to large, garden settings, signage and bathroom features.

Commercial commissions include restaurant entrance walls at the International Palms Hotel in Brisbane (1998), Aussie World Theme Park, and upstairs amenities in Palm View, South Eastern Queensland. Mosaics were installed in areas of wall, bench-tops and mirrors in Future World Design

For private and commercial commissions go to the Works menu. While there check out the very small selection of pots, urns, platters, and vases in Objects

Exhibiting is another exciting area of my practice, it’s a chance to give my own concepts free reign. There’s an expanding appreciation for mosaic in unexpected ways, from exhibitions for seasonal grape-picking celebrations (see below) to group shows and collaborations. The most recent include the Butter Factory Arts Centre, (Cooroy, 2017), & The Tesserae Forest, at The Art Hub (Cooroy, 2018).
